Dance Department hosts Ballet Showcase Nov. 5-6

The annual fall “Ballet Showcase” at Brigham Young University will take place Friday and Saturday, Nov. 5-6, in the Dance Studio Theatre of the Richards Building.

There will be nightly shows at 7:30 p.m. and a matinee show Saturday at 2 p.m. Tickets for the event are available through the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-4322, or online at byuarts.com and will be available at the door.

The showcase will feature performances and choreography by students and faculty from BYU’s Department of Dance.

“Glimpses into Village Life,” choreographed by showcase artistic director Kalise Child, will highlight what European village life may have been for women. It highlights their intense physical labor, the tragic loss of loved ones and friendships.

“Nothing Serious” contrasts the styles of ballet and contemporary movement. It is a joint project between faculty members Pat Debenham and Shani Robison from Contemporary Dance Theatre and Theatre Ballet, respectively.

Katy Barton, a senior and BYU Ballet Club president, will perform a solo work, “Blissful Day and Sleepless Night,” choreographed by Rachael Goodwin.

Another senior, Martha Baldwin, will debut her senior work. Inspired by time spent in Spain among the Flamenco dancers, her piece has a Spanish flair with beautiful formations and contrasting clapping rhythms which resemble the Flamenco style, according to ballet faculty member Lynne Thompson.

For more information, contact Kalise Child at (801) 913-0914.
