Culture of Turkistan to be focus of Kennedy Center lecture Nov. 6

Music, song and dance of the Uyghur people of Turkistan will accompany an Area Focus Lecture, "History of Uyghur Arts in Islamic Chinese Turkistan" Thursday, Nov. 6, at 1 p.m. in 238 Herald R. Clark Building on the Brigham Young University campus.

Anwar Yusuf, director of the Eastern Turkistan National Freedom Center in Washington, D.C., will present the lecture, which is sponsored by the Utah Humanities Council, Amnesty International, Asian and Middle East Studies, Eastern Arts and the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies.

One of the main peoples of Turkistan, the Uyghurs have their own language, script and history of written works. The Chinese Peoples' Liberation Army has occupied the region since 1949.

Yusuf, who is a native of Kashi in Eastern Turkistan, is working through his organization and others to promote the freedom and welfare of Turkistan and the other diverse peoples and cultures in the area from the Chinese government.

The lecture will be webcast live at www.kennedy.byu.edu/events/index.html.

Contact Lee Simons at (801) 422-2652 for more information, or visit the Kennedy Center Web site at kennedy.byu.edu/events for archived lectures and a calendar of other upcoming events and lectures.
