Critical Language Scholarship Program info session at BYU March 31

The David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies at Brigham Young University is hosting an information session on the Critical Language Scholarship Program Thursday, March 31, at 3 p.m. in 238 Herald R. Clark Building featuring Casey Poe, University of Utah CLS program administrator in Egypt.

Attendees will learn about summer 2012 programs sponsored by  the Critical Language Scholarship Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs. CLS institutes provide fully funded, group-based, intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to 10 weeks for U.S. citizen undergraduate, master’s degree and doctoral students.

Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period and later apply their critical language skills in their future professional careers.

Language programs for 2011 include:

  • Arabic, Persian: beginning, intermediate, or advanced level.
  • Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi, Turkish, Urdu: beginning, intermediate, or advanced level.
  • Chinese, Japanese, Russian: intermediate or advanced level.

Poe coordinates study abroad programs and exchanges in the Middle East and Africa and Spanish-language programs in Latin America and Spain, as well as administers the CLS Program in Alexandria, Egypt. Prior to joining the University of Utah, Poe worked as a congressional intern in Washington, D.C., as a Spanish interpreter for various organizations and as a standardized testing instructor for Kaplan Test Prep.

This session is co-sponsored by the Office of Prestigious Scholarships, the Foreign Service Student Organization and the David M. Kennedy Center Advisement. For more information about CLS, visit clscholarship.org. This session will be archived at kennedy.byu.edu/archive.
