Name: Darin Oviatt
BYU employee since: 1992
My job at BYU is... Associate Dean in Continuing Education working closely with programs for youth and adults on and off campus.
Currently I'm working on... Research on local learning communities organized by Independent Study students when they take online courses.
I'm currently reading... The Infinite Atonement and Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage.
I get most excited about my work when... Students and participants in our programs express new knowledge that they have received or a strengthened commitment to living lives of character and gospel principles.
Finding ways to help students learn when they cannot attend school...sparked my interest in my field.
Serving others in the Church ...changed the way I view... my own trials and challenges.
My advice to incoming freshman is... Remember that the BYU experience includes doing your best in all areas of your life, not just your schoolwork.
My advice to graduating seniors is... Gratitude for the blessings of your education is best expressed by being excellent in your professional and academic pursuits and remaining faithful to God.
The best-kept BYU secret is... The pleasant walks on the paths around campus.
I've been a BYU fan since... Listening to Paul James report the Cougar basketball champions of the NIT in 1966.
My go-to BYU Creamery ice cream flavor is... Graham Canyon.
My favorite BYU tradition is... attending the devotionals and forums.
I've hiked Y Mountain...12 times.
My favorite spot on campus is... my seats in the north end zone at LaVell Edwards Stadium on a fall Saturday afternoon.
My favorite Cougar athlete is... Taysom Hill. What an example of perseverance, positivity, and faith.
My most cherished memory at BYU was... sitting in the devotionals and firesides with my wife when we were both attending BYU.
I'm secretly good at... writing poetry.
I dream about one day... golfing at Pebble Beach.
I wanted to be... a high school music teacher...when I grew up.
My favorite sayings are... "For anything worth having one must pay the price; and the price is always work, patience, love, self-sacrifice - no paper currency, no promises to pay, but the gold of real service." - John Burroughs; and: "Just keep swimming" - Dori
I always smile when... I see or think about a member of my family.
When I have 30 minutes of free-time, you can find me... On a walk, reading or working in the yard.
