CORRECTED: Alumni Achievement Awardees give college lectures Oct. 10 and 11

A previous release had incorrect dates for two of the lectures

Eleven of Brigham Young University’s outstanding graduates will be honored during Homecoming with Alumni Achievement Awards, and as part of the award nine will give lectures Oct. 10 at 11 a.m. throughout campus. One recipient gave a lecture in August and one other will present two lectures Oct. 11.

Awardees, locations and topics on Oct. 10 include:

•    Richard E. Culatta, David O. McKay School of Education, 115 David O. McKay Building, “Five Opportunities to Change the World through Learning.”

•    Brigadier Gen. David A. Harris, Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology, 140 Joseph Smith Building, “Performance and Control.”

•    D. Nathan Sheets, Family, Home and Social Sciences, 250 Spencer W. Kimball Tower, “Digging Out of Debt: Is the US Fiscal Experience after WWII Relevant Today?”

•    Art Rascon, Fine Arts and Communications, Madsen Recital Hall, “Finding Peace in a World of Conflict.”

•    Brigham Taylor, College of Humanities, B092 Joseph F. Smith Building, “Going West.”

•    Matthew H. Tueller, David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies, 238 Herald R. Clark Building, “Confessions of a Middle East Expert.”

•    Craig M. Meyers, College of Life Sciences, 446 Thomas L. Martin Building,  “25 Years of Research on the Human Papillomavirus.”

•    Sandra S. Mangum, College of Nursing, B002 Joseph F. Smith Building, “Courage to Care.”

•    Philip S. Low, College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, 1170 James E. Talmage Building, “Novel Targeted Therapeutic and Imaging Agents for Cancer and Inflammatory Diseases.”

Richard K. Herlin, Marriott School of Management, will speak Friday (Oct. 11) at 10 and 11 a.m. in 710 N. Eldon Tanner Building. His topic will be “Integrity: The Key to Leadership.”

Hannah C. Smith, J. Reuben Clark Law School, spoke in August on “Religious Freedom: Preserving our First Freedom.”

Duo of BYU professors named to list of world's most influential researchers

BYU research: Mega wildfires can actually be a good thing

BYU professor Sam St. Clair is the principal investigator on the first study to show positive impacts of megafires (fires greater than 100,000 acres) across different forest types. Megafires can help some forest communities thrive — especially in areas where chronic browsing by elk, deer, and livestock has hindered tree regeneration, a widespread issue that often leads to forest regeneration failure.
