Community-based theatre will be guest lecturer's topic at BYU Nov. 1

As part of Brigham Young University’s Mary Lou Fulton Chair in Theatre and Media Arts, Sonja Kuftinec, author of “Staging America: Cornerstone and Community-Based Theater,” will present a lecture on Thursday, Nov. 1, at 11 a.m. in the Nelke Theatre, Harris Fine Arts Center.

Admission to the lecture is free and the public is welcome to attend.

The lecture is part of a weeklong residency by Kuftinec during which she will present workshops and master classes on community-based theatre and visit various theatre classes on campus to meet with students.

There will also be a performance of a theatrical piece Kuftinec and a number of BYU students will workshop during the week on Friday, Nov. 2, at 5 p.m. in the Nelke Theatre. That event is also free of charge and the public is invited.

Kuftinec is a professor in the University of Minnesota’s Department of Theatre Arts and Dance. Her research focuses on the role of theatre in fostering social change and she has created theatrical works in both the United States and the Middle East that address this issue.

Kuftinec’s visit to BYU is part of a larger fine arts initiative titled “Theatre and Community Stories.” The initiative comprises a series of events exploring the idea that stories told through theatre and other performance venues not only reflect the relationships that exist between various communities, but also help to form those communities and the relationships between them.
