“The Colourful Viennese Classic” topic for BYU lecture, recital April 12

Guest artists Ernst Kubitschek on the piano and traverso flute and Marianne Roenez on violin and viola d’amore will deliver a Brigham Young University School of Music Lecture at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 12, in the Madsen Recital Hall of the Harris Fine Arts Center, with an accompanying concert at 3 p.m. in the Lied Gallery in the Museum of Art at Brigham Young University. Admission is free.

Their concert is titled “The Colourful Viennese Classic” and includes works by Mozart, Haydn, Stamitz and Albrechtsberger. Also featured on the program will be faculty performer Eric Hansen on the double bass.

Kubitschek is a member of the faculty at the Universitat Mozarteum Salzburg and the Landeskonservatorium Tirol. He specializes on the blocke flute, traverse flute, organ and piano and has edited several editions of music from the 17th and 18th centuries. He is an active lecturer, performer, clinician and recording artist.

Roenez gives lectures and recitals throughout the United States, Europe and Korea. She specializes in Renaissance and Baroque music practice for violin, viola and viola d'amore and has made recordings which include sonatas and concerti of Bach, Biber, Telemann, Geminiani, Corelli, Fontana, Boccherini and Castello. She is working on a book about the development of violin technique from the beginning up to the 19th century.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
