Claudine Bigelow to give faculty viola recital Jan. 23

The Brigham Young University School of Music presents Claudine Bigelow in a faculty viola recital Friday, Jan. 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

The performance is free and the public is welcome to attend.

Bigelow will be performing music by Brahms, Bach and Benjamin Britten. The program will also feature vocalist Ruth Christensen and pianist Scott Holden.

"These pieces are really well-loved for their rich harmonies and melodies," Bigelow said. "It's all beautiful music."

One of the highlights of the recital will be Ruth Christensen's performance of a piece by John Dowland, programmed just before Bigelow performs Britten's reflections on Dowland's work, "Lachrymae."

Bigelow said that the performance of the original work should make Britten's piece more enjoyable and easier to understand for the audience.

"It's an exciting opportunity to really understand the setting of a theme, and to hear in it all the mysterious contemporary colors," Bigelow said.

Bigelow said the recital will be the perfect occasion to hear the richer, deeper and lower sounds of the viola.
