The BYU School of Music presents a joint faculty recital on Tuesday, Sept. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall of the Harris Fine Arts Center. Admission to the event is free and open to all audiences.
The recital features Claudine Bigelow on the viola and Geralyn Giovannetti on the oboe. They are joined by graduate student Michelle Papenfuss on the piano.
The trio will perform music by Rebecca Clarke, an important composer in breaking barriers for women in music. The program’s theme focuses on music composed during the span of the suffrage period, from the middle of the 19th century to the early 20th century. It also includes works by Klughardt, White and Kahn.
“We want to feature strong pieces by women,” Bigelow said. “While the music is not directly connected to women’s suffrage, our goal has been to share the sounds and musical aesthetic from that period and juxtapose the music to what was happening in the suffrage movement at the same time.”
In October, the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and Brigham Young University's Art, Design and Music programs will meet in Adams, Massachusetts, to collaborate on creative projects investigating the suffragist movement. The work involves faculty and students in mentoring situations, creating art together. The faculty recital is preparation for the BYU groups’ visit to Massachusetts.
