Citizen's response to Afghanistan to be lecture topic at BYU Sept. 5

Laura Dupuy, executive director of the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy, will speak about “A Citizen Diplomat in Afghanistan” at a lecture hosted by the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies Wednesday, Sept. 5, at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark Building at Brigham Young University.

The lecture will provide insights to some of the rising questions on Afghanistan-U.S. relations, such as what the United States stands to lose if it departs prematurely from this increasingly dangerous and unpredictable region.

Early this year, Dupuy traveled to Afghanistan with five other community leaders at the invitation of Ambassador Ryan Crocker and the U.S. Department of State. The delegation was invited to evaluate the situation for themselves and were provided access to representatives from throughout Afghanistan, including meetings with President Hamid Karzai. Dupuy will share her journey through photos and firsthand accounts of her meetings with nearly 100 Afghans.

This lecture will be archived at kennedy.byu.edu/archive. For more information, contact Lee Simons at (801) 422-2652 or lee_simons@byu.edu.
