Herman Teule, chair of the Institute of Eastern Christian Studies at the Netherlands’ Radboud University Nijmegen, will speak at Brigham Young University Wednesday, June 22, at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.
Teule’s lecture, “Christians in Contemporary Iraq: Current Plight and Future Prospect,” is hosted by the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies.
Teule serves as a member of the advisory board for BYU’s Middle Eastern Texts Initiative. He is also a professor of Eastern Christianity at the Catholic University of Louvain. He is a specialist in Middle Eastern Christianity, working in particular on the Christian and Islamic literary culture of the 11th to 13th centuries.
He also researches contemporary Christianity in Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East and has made frequent trips to the region, consulting with the European governmental and nongovernmental institutions on asylum procedures for Middle Eastern Christians and working with several Middle Eastern Christian groups in Europe.
His recent publications include “Assyro-Chaldeans: Christians of Iraq, Iran and of Turkey” and “Syriac Renaissance.”
