Children, race, poverty to be topics of Daniel Lichter's Feb. 12 BYU address

Cornell professor's address will be this year's Marjorie Pay Hinckley Lecture

Professor Daniel T. Lichter, of Cornell University, will deliver his lecture “Children at Risk: Race, Poverty, and the American Future” on Thursday, February 12, at 7:30 p.m, in the BYU Hinckley Alumni & Visitors Center Assembly Hall. Lichter’s address will be the 11th annual Marjorie Pay Hinckley Lecture, named for the late wife of Gordon B. Hinckley, 15th president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.

Lichter is the Ferris Family professor in the Department of Policy Analysis and Management, Professor of Sociology, and Director of the Cornell Population Center. He teaches courses on population and public policy, poverty and inequality, and demographic techniques.

Lichter has published widely on demographic topics related to the family and welfare policy, including studies of children's changing living arrangements and poverty, cohabitation and marriage among unwed mothers, and welfare incentive effects on the family. He is especially interested in America's racial and ethnic transformation, growing diversity, and the implications for the future.

BYU established the Marjorie Pay Hinckley Endowed Chair in Social Work and the Social Sciences in 2003 to honor Sister Hinckley's commitment to strengthening home and family. The chair focuses on understanding and strengthening the family, the development of women, and strategies to help both parents and children in difficult circumstances. Each year, the chair invites a distinguished scholar to deliver a lecture addressing a pertinent social issue.
