Changes to BYU Employee Tuition Benefit program posted

BYU Benefits Services has issued the following reminders for full-time faculty and staff who are interested in using the tuition benefit for themselves, their spouses and their dependent children.

Faculty/staff tuition benefit: Regular full-time faculty, staff and administrative personnel planning to take classes prior to 5 p.m. for credit, audit or thesis hours need to have written approval from their department chair or supervisor and the dean or director over their area. Personnel Request for Class Attendance forms may be obtained from Benefits Services, D-240 ASB, or online at http://www.byu.edu/hr/managers/forms/.

Spouse/dependent tuition benefit: A new tuition and fees policy implemented this year has significantly changed the payment due date for tuition. For Fall Semester 2007, tuition and fees are considered due and payable seven days prior to the first day of class (i.e., Aug. 28). If payment is not made by the day following the Add/Drop Deadline (Sept. 18), classes will be deleted.

The BYU Employee Tuition Benefit pays a full tuition benefit for eligible spouses; however, for spouses enrolled in a graduate degree-seeking program, that benefit is taxable. Consequently, before the tuition benefit can be paid, employees are required to complete a Tuition Taxation Form for their spouses. The form can be found at http://www.byu.edu/hr/managers/forms/tuition-taxationand is available from Benefits Services, D-240 ASB. The form outlines the taxation payment options available under the Internal Revenue Code. Questions regarding this issue should be directed to Benefits Services at 422-4716.

Dependent children may receive the one-half tuition benefit until they (1) complete a bachelor’s degree, or (2) complete 152 semester hours at BYU, or (3) reach age 30. Marital status has no effect on the tuition benefit. If the benefit stops paying before one of the three criteria has been reached, dependents should contact Benefit Services at 422-4716.

Dependent children who are planning to attend BYU-Idaho Fall Semester and who are eligible to receive the tuition benefit need to contact Benefit Services at 422-4716. Payment of the one-half tuition benefit can be authorized and eligible dependents will need to pay only one-half tuition at BYU-Idaho at the start of the semester.

Updates on the tuition benefit may be found at http://www.byu.edu/hr/employees/tuition-benefits-update.
