'Cell Phones, Blogs, and Books' topic of Lee Library lecture Feb. 16

The Harold B. Lee Library’s House of Learning Lecture Series will host Brigham Young University education professor Janet Young Thursday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m. in the library auditorium on the first floor.

Admission is free and the public is welcome.

Young’s discussion, “Of Cell Phones, Blogs, and Books: Social Interaction and Our Sense of Being Literate,” will address the relationship between one’s “literate activities” and “literate identity.”

“Who we are and what we do shape and are shaped by the social world in which we engage in that literate activity,” Young said.

Young added that phone use, text messaging, blogging and even books are examples of ways people communicate with others and define themselves.

The House of Learning Lecture Series hosts scholars from different colleges on campus and presents views from an array of disciplines.
