"Celebrate Europe Week" at BYU April 1-5 promises lectures, films, fun

Tenth anniversary for BYU Center for the Study of Europe

The Center for the Study of Europe at Brigham Young University is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, and will conclude the commemoration in grand European style with “Celebrate Europe Week” Monday, April 1, through Friday, April 5.

The week-long celebration will include special guest speakers, European giveaways and a host of other cultural revelries. All events arefree and open to the public. More information, including a full calendar of events, is available at europe.byu.edu.

“‘Celebrate Europe Week’ should have something for everyone,” said CSE acting associate director Chip Oscarson. “We’re not just doing this for students studying Europe or languages. Everybody has something they love about Europe, and we’re trying to bring that to campus for a week.”

The festivities will begin on Monday with an evening of Dutch art and culture titled “Amsterdam Old and New.” The event starts at 5 p.m. at the Museum of Art.

Tuesday will celebrate the influence of European literature and cinema with a noon roundtable discussion on the famed French novel “Notre Dame de Paris” and a 7 p.m. screening of the 1939 film adaptation of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” in the Harold B. Lee Library auditorium on the first level.

On Wednesday, two speakers will highlight some of Europe’s cultural lessons from the 21st century. Guest lecturer Albrecht Classen, a German studies professor from the University of Arizona, will discuss the modern relevance of the European Middle Ages. Later, BYU’s Martha Peacock, Valerie Hegstrom and Heather Belnap Jensen will discuss “Why European Women Don’t…" in the final Café CSE conversation of the year.

Thursday and Friday will feature a series of events including two distinguished guest lectures, free gelato and performances by BYU music groups. Thursday evening’s activities will also include the Eurovision Talent Competition, a showcase competition of the best European-related talent on campus, and conclude the CSE’s “Go Europe Giveaway,” when one lucky student will win a free round-trip airfare to Europe.
