Call for papers issued for 2011 BYU Sperry Symposium on the Scriptures

The 40th annual Sidney B. Sperry Symposium at Brigham Young University, scheduled for October 2011, has issued a call for proposals for papers. This year’s theme is “The Things Which My Father Saw: Approaches to Lehi’s Dream and Nephi’s Vision.”

Papers should explore the cultural, doctrinal and ecclesiastical contexts of Lehi’s dream and Nephi’s vision in I Nephi chapters 8 and 11 through 14.

Proposals should take the form of a one-page essay, with four separate paragraphs detailing (1) the central question the research will endeavor to answer, (2) a preliminary thesis that will guide the thinking and writing, (3) a brief sketch of the kinds of sources (primary and secondary) consulted and (4) special experience or training that might enrich the work.

Proposals should be submitted electronically as a Word, WordPerfect or PDF document attachment to Patty Smith at patty_smith@byu.edu. Proposals should also include the following information in the heading of the proposal: name, occupation, address, phone number, e-mail address and a working title for the proposal.

Proposals must be received by April 1, and notifications to submitters will be sent out May 1. Final papers should be between 15 and 25 pages long.

For more information, contact the Religious Studies Center at (801) 422-3611.
