Call for articles for February Religious Education Student Symposium

Article due Nov. 28

Brigham Young University students may submit an article on a gospel-related topic by Nov. 28 for an opportunity to present at BYU’s eighth annual Religious Education Student Symposium in February.

Each year the religious symposium draws many undergraduate and graduate submissions on various gospel-related topics. Nearly 50 articles will be chosen to be presented at the religion forum in February, and about sixteen of them are published by the Religious Studies Center in a journal.

Some of the winning students receive cash prizes for meritorious submissions, with $1,000 awarded as the top prize.

“By submitting their papers, student authors can become a new voice, speaking for a new generation, addressing how this singular gospel applies in the lives of their generation,” said Jerry M. Perkins, faculty chair of the 2005 symposium.

Patty Smith, a member of the symposium committee, said, “Anytime you write a paper on a religious topic, it strengthens your testimony and causes you to think more deeply. You experience growth.”

For undergraduate Philip Webb, whose paper last year explored the divine mission of Joseph Smith, presenting his work in the symposium was a positive educational and spiritual experience.

“I enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about the Prophet Joseph Smith, to present my paper and receive feedback from my peers,” Webb said.

For submission guidelines, visit the Faculty Support Center in 271 Joseph Smith Building or call Patty Smith at (801) 422-3611.
