C. Terry Warner to discuss "Educating the Soul" at BYU devotional Nov. 11

C. Terry Warner, professor of philosophy, will give a Brigham Young University devotional address titled “Educating the Soul: Our Zion Tradition of Learning and Faith,” Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center.

Inspiration for his devotional message is taken from the permanent exhibit by the same name that Warner has spent the last few years creating at BYU's Joseph F. Smith Building.

Brigham Young said that not even the multiplication tables should be taught without the Spirit of God, but we seldom stop to consider what that really means, Warner said. "It’s the breadth and depth of a Zion education that makes it different from anything else in the world."

Warner will discuss examples of early education pioneers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who devoted themselves to “educating the souls” of their students, giving their all to others in a desire to nurture and serve.

After earning master's and doctoral degrees at Yale University, Warner joined the BYU Philosophy Department in 1967. He is author of “Bonds that Make Us Free: Healing Our Relationships, Coming to Ourselves” published by Deseret Book in 2001.

The devotional will be broadcast live on BYU Broadcasting networks. Visit byub.org/devotionals or speeches.byu.edu for rebroadcast information and archived devotional audio, video and transcripts.
