BYU's Synthesis to play big band sounds Nov. 19

The Brigham Young University School of Music presents the award-winning jazz ensemble Synthesis Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.

Tickets at $9 and $3 off with a BYU or student ID are available through the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 378-4322 or at www.byu.edu/hfac.

The program, directed by Ray Smith, will feature songs such as "Almost Like Being in Love," a "West Side Story" medley and "God Bless the Child."

It will also feature "Black Orpheus" from "Manha de Carnival," "Shining Star" from "Earth, Wind and Fire" and a tribute to jazz legend Tito Puente.

"Jazz music just makes you happier," Smith said. "It's very uplifting music."

Synthesis combines swing, blues, jazz, pop, Latin, funk and fusion styles into a feast of jazz entertainment.

Synthesis will also be joined by Syncopation and Vocal Jazz for several big-band pieces on the program.

Now in its 30th year, Synthesis has performed at prestigious jazz festivals throughout the world, including the North Sea Jazz Festival and the Antibes Jazz Festival in France.

Synthesis was featured in this year's Homecoming Spectacular, and is celebrating the important anniversary year with its new CD "The Best of Synthesis."
