BYU's Steve Riep to discuss Chinese nationalization Nov. 10

Steve Riep, associate professor of Chinese and comparative literature at Brigham Young University, will be speaking Wednesday, Nov. 10, at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark Building as part of the David M. Kennedy Center lecture series.

His lecture is titled “Mr. Kong in Shanghai: Revolutionizing a May Fourth Character in the Nationalizing Moment.”

Riep specializes in modern and contemporary Chinese literature, film and culture. He serves as head of the Chinese section and as faculty adviser to the Rice Papers, BYU’s undergraduate student journal devoted to Asian studies. He has also translated contemporary fiction, poetry and drama from both China and Taiwan.

Riep received a bachelor’s degree in Chinese and political economy from the University of California–Berkeley, a master’s degree in East Asian languages and cultures and modern Chinese literature from UCLA; and a doctorate from UCLA.

BYU’s space ace: Minor planet named in honor of Jani Radebaugh

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.
