BYU's Robin Hancock to present piano recital Jan. 8

Robin Hancock, a faculty member in the Brigham Young University School of Music, will be featured in a piano recital Tuesday, Jan. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Admission to the performance is free and the public is welcome to attend.

Hancock will perform several pieces he transcribed into piano solos from pieces that were originally composed for a full orchestra.

“Piano transcriptions shine a light on the performer’s ability to command the keyboard and simulate the sonorities of the full orchestra,” Hancock said. “Composers enjoy the challenge of shrinking up the big forces of an 80-piece orchestra, into the confines of one performer and a piano.”

The recital will include performances of J.S. Bach’s “Jesu, Joy Of Man’s Desiring,” Antonio Vivaldi’s “Winter” from “The Four Seasons,” Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Pie Jesu” from the Requiem, Aaron Copland’s“Billy the Kid” ballet suite and Elmer Bernstein’s theme from the movie “The Magnificent Seven.”

“This is a chance for the audience to get re-acquainted with a few of the world’s musical masterpieces and to hear them in a new way,” Hancock said.
