BYU's Ralph B. Brown honored by national Rural Sociological Society

Ralph B. Brown, an associate professor of sociology at Brigham Young University, recently received the Excellence in Instruction 2004 Award from the Rural Sociological Society.

Students from Mississippi State, where Brown taught before coming to BYU, and students from BYU nominated Brown for the national award.

"Dr. Brown dedicates himself to helping students learn more than a series of facts on a particular subject," says Vaughn Call, chair of the Department of Sociology. "He teaches them to think."

The Rural Sociological Society serves as the major social science association that promotes research and teaching about rural life and communities.

"We need to maintain the quality of instruction in the classroom, and this award illustrates the quality to which our faculty are dedicated," Call says.

Earlier in the year, Brown also received the Who's Who Among America's Teachers Award.

For media inquiries or information, call Vaughn Call at (801) 422-4453.
