BYU's Laurence M. Lowe to premiere new work at Oct. 19 recital

Laurence M. Lowe, a Brigham Young University professor of music, will present a faculty French horn recital Thursday, Oct. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.

Assisted by Amanda Nixon on piano and soprano Lauralyn Curtis, Lowe will perform two of his own horn compositions. Sonata No. 1 for Horn and Piano will include the “Freely,” “Elegy” and “Caccia” movements. The piece recently won an honorable mention in the International Horn Society’s composition contest.

The competition attracted 65 composers from 13 countries, many of whom are “very well-regarded,” Lowe said.

Following an intermission, the trio will present the world premiere of Lowe’s Sonata No. 2 for Horn, Soprano and Piano, which includes an aria based on the tune “Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier.”

An accomplished soloist, orchestral player and teacher, Lowe received a bachelor of music degree in applied horn from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 1980 and later a master’s degree in performance and literature from the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester. He has performed as a soloist at five workshops of the International Horn Society, and his orchestral and chamber assignments have taken him to Europe, the Far East, Brazil and Carnegie Hall, among other places.

His work has been featured in many motion pictures, and he recently played solo horn in Mannheim Steamroller’s “A Fresh Air Christmas” video.
