BYU's Kennedy Center names winners of student photo, essay contests

The David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies announces the awards for the fifth annual Photo Contest and the second annual Essay Contest in conjunction with International Education Week, Nov. 15-19.

First place and $100 went to Genevieve Brown for "Agua," taken in Comedero, Mexico. Second place and $75 was awarded to Katie Dedrickson for "The Street Musician," which she took while on study abroad in London. Allison Horne received third place and $50 for her entry taken in Binche, Belgium, "Mardi Gras Boy."

An additional 13 photos received honorable mention, as follows: "Lacemaking: An Ageless Art," Katie Dedrickson; "School Girl Selling Fried Crickets," John Collins; "A Walk with Quijote," Sara Milton; "Sembrando en el Cerro" and "Martina Making Tamales," Matthew Adams; "Ben and Madam Seywa," "Funeral Dancing," "Road to Kofiase" and "Fog Rider," Tyler Gibb; "Grace," Erin Rider; "Reading to the Future" and "The Daily Chore," Kelly Hill; and "Hallstatt in its Finest Hour," Brooke Porter.

Each student participated in an academic program abroad during 2003-04. International Study Programs sends more than 1,200 students abroad annually.

Last year the Kennedy Center added an essay contest to promote BYU students' understanding and appreciation for current global issues. Students were asked to choose one of three topics from which to write an analytical paper.

James D. Gilchrist, received top honors and $500 for his "Independence in Southern Sudan." Robert Keele and Dylan Finch shared second place and $250 with their collaborative effort, "A Workable Method," while Jacob Strain received third place and $250 for his entry "The Chinese and Uyghurs in the Xinjiang Situation."

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
