BYU's Jeffry H. Larson named fellow of National Council on Family Relations

The National Council on Family Relations recently named Jeffry H. Larson, a professor of family life at Brigham Young University, as one of five 2010 NCFR Fellows.

Fellow status in NCFR is awarded to a select few members who have made outstanding and enduring contributions to the field of the family in the areas of scholarship, teaching, outreach or professional service.

“It’s an honor to be awarded this status as a fellow in an organization that I’ve served in various leadership roles for the last 30 years,” Larson said. “I’m most thankful to the BYU School of Family Life and my colleagues for the opportunity to work with them and in doing so, enrich each other’s careers.”

Since joining the NCFR in 1980, Larson has served as an associate editor for their journal, “Family Relations,” and most recently as chair of their family therapy section.

“The NCFR’s primary goal is to strengthen family relationships across the world,” Larson said. “It encourages researchers and clinicians to do the best research possible and to share that information annually in conferences and journals.”

Larson teaches in the marriage and family therapy program at BYU and conducts research in couple assessment and therapy, predictors of marital satisfaction and stability and premarital, marital and remarital education approaches.

He graduated from BYU in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and received a master’s degree in 1974. He then received a doctorate in family, home and social sciences from Texas Tech University in 1980. He joined the BYU faculty in 1987.

He received the BYU Alumni Professorship Award in 2008, an award given to faculty in recognition of outstanding teaching, mentoring and the development of new courses, programs and philosophies.

The National Council on Family Relations, founded in 1938, is the oldest multidisciplinary, non-partisan professional organization focused solely on family research, practice and education. Its mission is to provide an educational forum for family researchers, educators and practitioners to share in the development and dissemination of knowledge about families and family relationships, establish professional standards and work to promote family well-being.
