BYU's Honors String Quartet plans April 7 recital

The Honors String Quartet at Brigham Young University’s School of Music will perform a recital Saturday, April 7, at 9:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

Sponsored by the George E. Watkins Gifts for Excellence in the Arts, the quartet includes John Allen Kovalenko, violin; Robert Landes, violin; Gina Roper, viola; and Scott Thomas Lesser, cello.

They will begin with a Beethoven string quartet and move to a piece called “Black Angels,” by George Crumb. This piece will include three main sections titled “Departure,” “Absence” and “Return,” and feature sections such as “Sounds of Bones and Flutes,” “Danse Macabre,” “Lost Bells (Echo),” and “God-music.” These selections will be followed by the Quartet No. 1 by Leoš Janáček.
