BYU's Group for New Music to present new works Oct. 9

Brigham Young University's Group for New Music ensemble will perform Saturday, Oct. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Admission is free and open to the public.

This year the concert will feature special guest artist Carlton Vickers. He is a world-renowned performer of contemporary and electroacoustic flute music. He has performed with Utah Symphony Orchestra, Canyonlands New Music Ensemble and the Maurice Abravanel Visiting Distinguished Composers Series.

Vickers will perform "Boundless Light" a world premiere performance, which was commissioned by the Barlow Endowment for Music Composition at BYU. The piece was composed by BYU professor Steven Ricks.

A harp solo composed by BYU professor Murray Boren will open the show.

BYU professor Christian Asplund will perform the world premiere performance of "Vision," commissioned by Mormon Artists Group and composed by Asplund.

Group for New Music will perform "Edge" under the direction of Ricks, and Group for Experimental Music, formed this year, will perform "Cobra" under the direction of Asplund.

"Cobra is written for open instrumentation, meaning any group of instrumentalists or singers can perform it," Asplund said. "It is directed by a 'prompter' who holds up cue cards rather than a conductor as in more traditional ensembles."

For more information contact Steven Ricks at (801) 422-6115 or Christian Asplund at (801) 422-3688.
