BYU's Dancensemble presents student choreography March 19-20

The Brigham Young University Department of Dance presents the Dancensemble Showcase Friday and Saturday, March 19-20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Dance Studio Theatre, 166 Richards Building.

A matinee performance will also be given Saturday, March 20, at 2 p.m.

Tickets at $5 are available through the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 378-4322 or at www.byu.edu/hfac.

The showcase features the 27-student-member Dancensemble, an auditioned modern dance group. Most are modern dance or dance education majors, but director Pat Debenham says the dancers are united in their interest in the creative process.

“They’re interested in performance,” Debenham said. “Most of the dances in the program come from the dancers themselves.”

Additionally, three faculty-choreographed pieces will be featured. Included is a dance about pioneer women who were left behind when their husbands joined the Mormon Battalion, choreographed by Caroline Prohosky, as well as two pieces by Debenham, “On the Wheel” and “Somebody Else’s Memory.”

“All of the pieces are quality, because each student has a unique choreographic voice,” Debenham said. “There is a lot of variety in the show—more variety than the cold cereal isle.”

For more information on the Dancensemble Showcase, contact Pat Debenham at (801) 422-3340.
