BYU's Dan R. Olsen Jr. named fellow of national computing association

Dan R. Olsen Jr., a Brigham Young University professor of computer science, was recently selected as a fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery in honor of his contributions to user interface technology.

Olsen joins the top 1 percent of the association’s membership to be named to a fellowship. The fellows are chosen based on their contributions to the practical and theoretical aspects of computing and information technology.

Olsen earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in computer science from BYU and a doctorate in computer and information science from the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to teaching classes at BYU since 1990, he has served as chair of the Department of Computer Science and earned the prestigious Karl G. Maeser Research and Creative Arts Award in 2003.

Olsen has also taught at Carnegie Mellon University and Arizona State University. He is also on the governing board of the Utah Science Technology and Research group.

The Association for Computing Machinery is an international scientific and educational organization dedicated to advancing the arts and sciences and the application of information technology. The association serves as a worldwide forum for computing professionals and students working with information technology.
