BYU's Cougarettes celebrate 60 years during concerts March 15-18

Brigham Young University’s precision dance team the Cougarettes will celebrate 60 years of dancing during their annual concerts Wednesday through Saturday, March 15-18, at 7:30 p.m. in 166 Richards Building.

Organized in 1946, the Cougarettes will celebrate their 60th anniversary with a group of Cougarette alumni performing in the concert. In addition, the current Cougarettes will entertain with a variety of dances routines, including jazz, character dance, tap and hip-hop choreography.

Directed by Jodi Maxfield, the Cougarettes will debut their new competition number incorporating high-energy jazz, hip-hop and cheer dance. The 18 dancers will also perform a hip-hop number choreographed by ballroom dance alumni Rick Robinson, several numbers choreographed by dance faculty member Janalyn Memmott, as well as their national award-winning number, “Silent Dolls.”

The Cougarettes are the National Dance Association 2005 Champions and were recently crowned the 2006 USA National College Dance Team Champions. In addition to presenting their award-winning number in the concert, they will preview the choreography they will use to compete in the upcoming 2006 NDA competition.

BYU’s world-class pipe organ is the ‘crown jewel’ of the new Concert Hall

If you haven’t experienced the pipe organ in the BYU Music Building yet, you’re in for a treat. With 4,613 pipes and 81 ranks (sets of pipes), it’s the third largest organ in Utah and the only one with two consoles. Organists can play from a console located in the center of the pipework facade or from a movable stage console.
