BYU's Bean Museum offers "Wildlife Adventures" for children during June

The Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum at Brigham Young University will offer its “Wildlife Adventures” classes for children ages 6-12 every Tuesday and Thursday during the month of June.

Tuesday classes run from 1-3 p.m. at the museum with no lunch provided. Thursday classes run from noon to 3 p.m., but are subject to change due to field trip travel. A snack is provided on Thursdays.

Registration is $30 per weeklong class for each student. If a student registers for two or more classes at a time, the second class is discounted 20 percent. Registration is required at least one week prior to the class. To register, contact the museum at (801) 422-5051

For more information and a registration form, visit the museum at 645 E. 1430 N. in Provo. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

The “Wildlife Adventures” program includes the following classes:

  • Children can learn about stars, build space probes and watch a show at the planetarium in “A Galaxy Near You” class Tuesday and Thursday, June 6 and 8. For the Thursday field trip to the planetarium, students will meet at the museum at 11:30 a.m.

  • Reptiles will be the subject of the “Ssssay Now, What Have We Here?” class Tuesday and Thursday, June 13 and 15. Students will have the opportunity to touch live reptiles and spend a day visiting Utah’s Hogle Zoo. For the Thursday field trip, students will meet at the museum at 11 a.m. and return at 4 p.m.

  • Children will have the opportunity to experiment with different types of leaves and plants, as well as tour large greenhouses, at the “Botany Brigade” class Tuesday and Thursday, June 20 and 22.

  • Students will learn basic survival skills and get a chance to test them at Bridal Veil Falls at the “Survival of the Fittest” class Tuesday and Thursday, June 27 and 29. For more information, contact the museum at (801) 422-5051.

    BYU professor Rob Sowby teaches and studies environmental engineering, urban water infrastructure and sustainability. He has particular expertise in the planning, design, construction and operation of public water systems. That expertise has been increasingly important (and regularly sought out) in the wake of apocalyptic wildfires that have taxed those public water systems.
