BYU's Bean Life Science Museum lists Saturday Safari schedule

The Brigham Young University Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum’s Saturday Safari, a discovery program tailored to children between ages 5 and 10, will begin Saturday, Sept. 24 with an exploration of animals of the Amazon.

Cost is $8 per child per class, and students must register one week in advance. Saturday Safari classes focus on teaching about animals, plants and the world. Classes are Saturday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

During the first Saturday Safari of October, children will examine the craziest feet on earth, including webbed and hoofed feet. Rodents of unusual sizes, such as the capybara and the porcupine, will be discussed Oct. 8. The class on Oct. 15 will take a close look at the mimicry of animals for survival, including a caterpillar that pretends to be a snake.

Animals of the Nile will be explored during the Oct. 22 safari, where students will learn about the crocodiles and hippos of Egypt. Children are invited to come in costume to the Halloween safari on Oct. 29 to learn about the legends behind spooky Halloween creatures.

Students will learn that more animals than just birds fly on Nov. 4. The fall session of Safari Saturdays will end by examining a new exhibit on bears. From the grumbling grizzly to the burly black bear, children will learn about the bears of the Bean Museum on Nov. 12.

The museum, located southeast of the Marriott Center, is open Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, please call (801) 422-5051.
