BYU's avant-garde Group for New Music will perform Feb. 17

Celebrating the 80th birthday of Morton Feldman

Brigham Young University’s Group for New Music will perform avant-garde pieces honoring a 20th century composer Friday, Feb. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.

The event will celebrate the 80th birthday of Morton Feldman, a composer who passed away in 1987. The second half of the program will feature the Utah premiere of Feldman’s “Palais de Mari,” one of his latest and shortest works.

The program will include the cello and piano work “Untrammeled Thought” by Bunita Marcus, who also commissioned Feldman’s “Palais de Mari.” Marcus is scheduled to be a guest composer for BYU’s Barlow Endowment for Music Composition in February 2007.

Group for New Music will perform Jürg Baur's flute quartet “Petite Suite,” Leo Brouwer's guitar quartet “Cuban Landscape with Rain” and Kyle Gann's Tango da Chiesa featuring the disklavier. The program will also feature “Lamentation” by BYU faculty member Michael Hicks, based on texts by Jeremiah and performed by clarinet and baritone voice performers.

The Group for New Music, founded about 20 years ago by Hicks, plays formally composed avant-garde music. This group uses extended technique, which includes using instruments in ways they are not usually used.

For more information, contact Michael Hicks at (801) 422-3688.
