BYU's avant-garde Group for New Music to present Oct. 19 recital

Brigham Young University’s Group for New Music, an avant-garde music ensemble, will perform in the Madsen Recital Hall Saturday, Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m.

Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.

The performance will feature several pieces composed by members of the group. Founder Michael Hicks wrote “The Annunciation,” which will feature Scott Holden on the piano, and Christian Asplund will perform his work, “The Beatitudes,” with soprano Britta Peterson. Both composers are members of the School of Music faculty.

Other compositions will include “Two from Living Room Music” by John Cage, “Cuban Landscape with Rhumba” by Leo Brouwer and Anthony Plog’s “Two Etudes.”

Group for New Music, founded nearly 20 years ago, specializes in formally composed avant-garde music. The group embraces extended technique, which uses instruments in unusual ways.

BYU’s space ace: Minor planet named in honor of Jani Radebaugh

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.
