#BYUDevo Elder Kent F. Richards on Jesus Christ's example

"At times you may feel that you are sitting on the curb, lost and afraid, but if you will look to the Savior, He will guide you safely home," said Elder Kent F. Richards of the LDS Second Quorum of the Seventy at the BYU Devotional Tuesday.

Richards told the audience to see Christ's life as an example of enduring to the end, gaining eternal salvation and receiving everlasting happiness.

Christ, like many people on earth today, learned through His own experiences, and then grew from those experiences. Because personal growth comes from within, trials become a quest for eternal perfection, instead of a test of faith.

"You are defined by how you discover your own path and then overcome all of the obstacles that seem to make it hard to progress," Richards said.

Christ then "waited upon the Lord for the time of his ministry to come." Waiting on the Lord means preparing in the daily things like scripture study and prayer. Richards counseled that we too should continually be preparing for our next choice or experience, instead of waiting for a call to action.

Christ made covenants and ordinances inside the temple, and saints, especially young adults, should follow His example to take advantage of temple blessings. The spiritual power, revelatory help and inspired insights will help one through those times when they feel like they are left on the curbside with nowhere to go.

"The Father knows our needs, and knows our future. He send us the sustaining blessings just as we need them-but, in our experience, only as we were doing our best," Richards said.

Next Week's Devotional

The next BYU Devotional address will be held on Tuesday, March 17, at 11:05 a.m., in the Marriott Center. Carl Hernandez, BYU professor in the J. Reuben Clark Law School, will deliver the address.

Hernandez's remarks will be broadcast live on BYUtv, BYUtv.org (and archived for on-demand streaming), KBYU-TV 11, Classical 89 FM, BYU Radio, and will be archived on speeches.byu.edu.

The title of Hernandez's Devotional address will be "Devoted Discipleship." He will be speaking about his life experiences, including those as a migrant farm worker in the Central Valley of California, and how those experiences shaped his opinion on how we might be able to increase our devotion to the Savior.
