BYU Young DanceMakers celebrate animal life in concerts May 7-8

Brigham Young University’s children’s group the Young DanceMakers will perform “An Evening of Dance — All Creatures Great and Small” Friday and Saturday, May 7-8, at the de Jong Concert Hall. Both performances will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for the event are available through byuarts.com or by calling (801) 422-4322. Tickets are $8.

The performance will feature more than 120 children age 6 to 18 who have created and choreographed their own dances based on all kinds of amazing creatures. The dances will demonstrate tigers, birds, dinosaurs, kangaroos, ground hogs and even chickens and coyotes dancing together. Other dances will more magical creatures like fireflies, protozoa and even imaginary “intergalactic worms.”

“We’re All On the Same Boat” features 12 dancing animals aboard Noah’s Ark. Another dance will showcase a hand-painted Chinese dragon.

One of the evening’s highlights will be “Eve, the Crowning Creation,” which includes 12 young women performing to an original score.

“My accompanist, Beth Emmers, improvised the original music based on my moving as I taught class each day,” said director Kathleen Sheffield. “This dance and the musical composition reflect a spirit of gratitude to Eve, the mother of all living, and an acknowledgement of her sacrifice and courage in choosing. These 12 young women will bring an additional sense of purity, innocence and power to the work.”
