BYU Wind Ensemble plans "Chronicles and Celebrations" in March 1 concert

Includes recently discovered work performed at 1892 Salt Lake Temple dedication

The Brigham Young University Wind Ensemble will present its winter concert, "Chronicles and Celebrations," Friday, March 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. For tickets, visit the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-4322 or byuarts.com/tickets.

The evening will begin with the concert's namesake piece, "Celebrations" by John Zdchlik and will include John Williams' "Liberty Fanfare" and John Philip Sousa's "The Stars and Stripes Forever," "Hands Across the Sea" and "Radetsky March."

Also featured will be Ronald LoPresti's "Elegy for a Young American" composed shortly after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and Karel Husa's "Music for Prague 1968" written by the Czech-born composer as a response to the oppressive events in his homeland.

Former BYU graduate student Bryant Smith recently uncovered Charles John Thomas' "Capstone March" which was performed at the ceremonial laying of the capstone of the Salt Lake Temple in 1892. Smith's transcription used a previously unknown copy of the work, the only other copy being placed in the capstone. It will likely be the first performance of this work in more than 100 years.

The Wind Ensemble is made up of the finest wind and percussion students in the BYU School of Music, and has toured internationally.
