The Earth Science Museum is displaying "Torvosaurus Tanneri," a large, carnivorous dinosaur. The museum also features two fully mounted skeletons of Camptosaurus and Allosaurus, a mural of the Utah-Colorado region in the Jurassic period, a 150-million-year-old dinosaur egg and a preparation lab window showing museum personnel preparing fossils. Visitors may touch real fossils at the fossil touch table and see a unique Diceratops skull. Admission is free. The Earth Science Museum is located at 1683 North Canyon Road in Provo, Utah. The museum is open Mondays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. For more information, call (801) 378-3680.
Through the generosity of Fred and Sue Morris of Salt Lake City, the world's most complete collection of waterfowl and pheasants will be exhibited as a part of the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum's permanent collection. Other exhibits on display are "Ecosystem Dioramas," "Africa: A Diverse Continent," "Cats of the World" and "Synoptic Collections" of vertebrate animals. Gallery shows for the public featuring reptiles are conducted Mondays at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 1:30 p.m. Children's story time is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. and noon in the children's discovery room. "Saturday Safari" is a program at the museum tailored to children between ages five and 12. It focuses on teaching about animals, plants and the world around them. The Museum of Peoples and Cultures, located at 700 N. 100 E. in Provo, is currently showcasing "Custom Made: Artifacts as Cultural Expression." The exhibit explores the qualities that define cultures around the world. The exhibition leads visitors through North America, South America and into the isles of the Pacific. The museum also offers tours and teaching kit programs. The teaching kits are provided as supplementary resources for teaching anthropology in Utah. The museum also offers volunteer opportunities. Career Placement Services at Brigham Young University will sponsor the Fall 2003 Career Fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Wilkinson Student Center Ballroom. More than 100 employers from business, financial, technical, government and nonprofit sectors have registered for the fair. The Career Fair is open to all students as well as BYU alumni. In order to help students prepare, CPS offers special workshops on resumes, letter-writing and interviewing to help students better prepare for the career fair. Eric A. Hyer, associate professor of political science at BYU and an expert on the People's Republic of China, will address the topic "American Perspectives on U.S.-China Relations" at 11 a.m. in 238 Herald R. Clark Building as part of the International Forum Lecture Series. Hyer serves as BYU's Special Country Focus liaison for China. The series is sponsored by the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies.

College Democrats and Republicans will sponsor a roundtable discussion on America's continued presence in Iraq at 7:30 p.m. in 2104 Jesse Knight Humanities Building. Four professors from the political science department representing different viewpoints will comprise the panel.

The Division of Continuing Education at Brigham Young University is sponsoring the annual "Families Under Fire" conference at the Conference Center on the BYU campus. The theme of this year's conference is "Off to the Rescue We'll Hasten, Bringing Them Back to the Fold." The conference, which will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, is open to everyone. The fee for the conference is $60 for one person and $95 for a couple. Kristen Randle, a BYU graduate and former English teacher, will be the featured author at the weekly English Department Reading Series in the Harold B. Lee Library Auditorium at noon. Her honors include the American Library Association's Best Books list, the Michigan Library Association's Best Book of the Year for 1996 and Booklist Top Ten Pick of the Year.

The theme for Homecoming this year is "Never Stand Still." Activities for the week begin Tuesday at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center when a sampling of the Homecoming Spectacular features the Young Ambassadors, Ballroom Dance Company and advanced tap dancers in a medley of "Rosie the Riveter," "It Don't Mean a Thing" and "Sing, Sing, Sing." The event will also include President and Sister Samuelson, the Cougar Marching Band, the student Brimhall essay winner and a video presentation of 6th BYU president Howard S. McDonald. Following the ceremonies, the band will lead students to Brigham Square for the BYUSA Homecoming kickoff and food from the Barbecue Club.
Other scheduled Homecoming activities include:
- Hike and light the "Y," Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 6:30 p.m. Meet at the Wilkinson Student Center in front of Jamba Juice.
- BYUSA Homecoming activities on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at noon in the Wilkinson Student Center Terrace.
- The Homecoming Baby Pageant will be held Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Wilkinson Student Center Terrace.
- College Honored Alumni Lecture series will be held at 11 a.m. in various locations around campus.
- Homecoming reunions will be held Friday and Saturday in various locations around town.
- The Big Band Alumni Dinner will be held Friday at 5 p.m. in the Wilkinson Student Center Ballroom.
- Synthesis and the Young Ambassadors will perform as part of the Homecoming Spectacular Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the Marriott Center. Tickets are available through the Marriott Center Box Office at (801) 378-2981. Prices are $11 and $12 for adults, $6 for students and $5 for groups of 20 or more.
- Homecoming dances will begin at 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday in various locations.
- The Kid's Fun Run starts at 8:45 a.m. and the 5K Cougar Run starts at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the BYU track south of LaVell Edwards Stadium.
- The Homecoming Pancake Breakfast will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday in the following locations: the Maeser stairs, the Creamery on 9th, the Sinclair Station on the southeast corner of campus and the Botany Pond.
- The Homecoming Parade will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Marriott Center east parking lot.
- The annual True Blue football game will start at 1 p.m. Saturday on Helaman Field.
Wednesday, Oct. 8
"Tortilla Soup" will be shown in the Harold B. Lee Library Auditorium at 5 p.m. as part of the library's Hispanic Film Series. The movie is about a veteran chef who is slowly losing his sense of taste while his three daughters choose different career paths.

Gina Clark, a part-time instructor at BYU, and author Scott Hatch will share their work at the weekly English Department Reading Series in the Harold B. Lee Library Auditorium at noon. Clark has received an honorable mention in the "Atlantic Monthly Poetry Competition" and second place in the Utah Arts Council Poetry Contest. Hatch received first prize in the 2002 Utah Arts Council Poetry Competition and placed second in the last two Utah Arts Council book-length poetry competitions.

The L. Tom Perry Special Collections will host a conference titled "The Gentle Madness of Book Collecting" in 1130 Harold B. Lee Library. Speakers will include administrators and curators of the department. Featured activities will include small group seminars with hands-on opportunities; interaction with book collectors, curators, and conservators; and behind-the-scenes tours of the special collection vaults. Ron Carlson, a professor of English at Arizona State University, will read some of his work at the weekly English Department Reading Series in the Harold B. Lee Library Auditorium at noon. Carlson has had his work published in prestigious journals and anthologies, including "The Norton Anthology of Short Fiction." Carlson has been awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Fiction and hosts "Books and Company" on KAET Public Television in Arizona.
