BYU, UVU Student Alumni Associations join forces for food drive Nov. 13-30

Brigham Young University Dining Services will be making what it hopes to be the world’s largest cougar tail, or a maple doughnut bar, Wednesday, Nov. 28, as part of the annual BYU food drive.

Anyone who donates food that day at the Wilkinson Student Center Garden Court will receive a portion of the popular pastry. A member of the Guinness Book of World Records will be present to confirm its record-breaking status.

This event is part of a more than two-week food drive sponsored by the BYU and Utah Valley University Student Alumni Associations which will begin Tuesday, Nov. 13, and end Friday, Nov. 30.

For the last 15 years, BYU has helped sponsor the largest food drive in Utah County. Previously the drive was fueled by a rivalry with the University of Utah. This year, however, the two major universities in Utah County are uniting to help the community.

In 2011, the food drive collected an impressive $45,676 and 194,000 pounds of food, but Brielle Porter, vice president of communications for BYU’s Student Alumni Association, said they wanted to increase the donations.

“With UVU’s help, we are hoping to beat that number,” said Porter.

Among the food drive events is Slam Dunk Hunger Tuesday, Nov. 13, in the BYU Broadcasting Building from 3 to 7 p.m. Community members and students are invited to donate as well as participate in games and other activities. KBYU will give away BYU men’s basketball tickets during the evening.

On Monday, Nov. 26, there will be a "blitz" night, where student volunteers will go door to door collecting canned foods from students who live around campus.

Donation barrels where people may drop off canned foods will be located around the BYU campus and select Provo locations. Monetary donations will be accepted by the BYU Bookstore, BYU Cougareat, BYU Creameries and local businesses. Online donations may be made at fooddrive.byu.edu.

January 13, 2025
BYU’s Compliant Mechanisms Research lab, inspired by the ancient art of origami, is building a foldable, compact design that could help launch satellite systems to space in a rocket. After five years of research, a team led by professors Larry Howell and Spencer Magleby has succeeded in creating foldable antenna systems than can deploy off space rockets and permanently open to enhance satellite systems.
