BYU Trombone Choir, Harp Ensemble plan free concerts this week

The Brigham Young University School of Music is offering a pair of free concerts this week:

• Under the direction of Will Kimball, the BYU Trombone Choir will participate in Trombone Night Thursday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center. Admission is free.

The evening will feature a 14-part trombone ensemble performing a mix of religious music, modern trombone music and classical music.

Highlights of the evening will include all five movements of Arvo Pärt’s “Magnificat Antiphons” as well as solos and duets from members of the Trombone Choir and Bramhs’ “How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place” led by guest conductor Gerardo Garza.

• The BYU Harp Ensemble presents its spring solo and ensemble concert Saturday, March 30, at 3 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. The concert will feature songs played by small groups and solo harpists.

The program includes works from Bach, Handel, Chopin, Louis Spohr, Mikhail Glinka and original arrangements from the “Lord of the Rings” and “Brave” film scores.

Members of the ensemble will be led by Harp Ensemble director Anamae Anderson and harp professor Tess Maxwell.
