BYU symposium Nov. 10 to examine life, contributions of Oliver Cowdery

Principal scribe for the translation of the Book of Mormon

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Oliver Cowdery’s birth, the Mormon Historic Sites Foundation and the Brigham Young University Religious Studies Center are co-sponsoring a symposium focused on his life and mission Friday, Nov. 10 from noon until 5 p.m.

The symposium, “Oliver Cowdery: Restoration Witness, Second Elder,” will take place in the BYU Conference Center and will host speakers such as Richard L. Bushman, Susan Easton Black, John W. Welch and others.

This free event will cover Cowdery’s activities, contributions and service during the early years of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Cowdery served as principal scribe for the translation of the Book of Mormon, was present at the restoration of both priesthoods, and labored as the assistant president of the Church. Although he spent a decade out of the Church, he returned in 1848 and died in full fellowship in 1850.
