BYU Studies releases bilingual text, "Poets of Mozambique'

Compiled and translated by Frederick G. Williams

As part of a bilingual Portuguese poetry publication series sponsored by BYU Studies, an English-Portuguese book, “Poets of Mozambique,” was launched in Maputo, Mozambique, in July.

The book, which was compiled and translated by Brigham Young University professor Frederick G. Williams, the Gerrit de Jong, Jr. Distinguished Professor of Luso-Brazilian Studies in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, includes 130 poems by 27 poets. The English translations are included along with the Portuguese originals.

“Poets of Mozambique” was originally written in answer to a need for a bilingual book of poetry for students, according to Williams. The series currently contains “Poets of Brazil” and will soon be followed by “Poets of Portugal.”

Williams has served on the advisory boards of BYU Studies and International Studies Program at the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies. He is also a faculty affiliate of the Kennedy Center and directed a BYU volunteer academic/service program in Mozambique during the summer term of 2000, where he taught Mozambican literature and participated in food and clothing distribution for refugees of the devastating East African floods of 2000.
