BYU student wins first place honors at international trumpet competition

A Brigham Young University School of Music student was awarded two first-place honors at the 2003 International Trumpet Guild Conference.

Nathan Botts was awarded first place in both the jazz improvisation and solo performance competitions.

"Never before has a student won first place in two competitions at the International Trumpet Guild," said K. Newell Dayley, associate academic vice president and dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communications.

In the solo performance competition, Botts played Joseph Haydn's Concerto in E-flat major and Charles Chaynes' Concerto.

In the jazz improvisation competition, Botts performed "Nica's Dream," "Impressions," and "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat." He closed with "I Got Rhythm, But I'm Tone Deaf," an original composition.

After Botts graduates from BYU in August, he will continue his education as a graduate student at The Juilliard School.
