BYU student teams advance to international programming competition in Prague

A computer programming team from Brigham Young University will attend an international programming competition after placing first at the Association for Computing Machinery Rocky Mountain Programming Contest held at the University of Utah.

In addition, three other BYU teams placed in the top eight at the Nov. 15 event, one of five Rocky Mountain regional sites for the competition.

The top BYU team consists of seniors Michael Bailey, Ivan Andrus and Matthew Reeder.

After the scores from all region sites were added together, BYU placed second, fifth, 17th and 28th. The top team from the region automatically qualified for the international competition in Prague, Czech Republic, to be held March 28 through April 1.

The second-place BYU team qualified as an at-large invitee. They hope to find sponsors to financially support their trip.

The three-person teams were given eight computer-programming problems to solve within a five-hour time limit. Teams are judged on how many problems they solve and how fast they solve them. Teams can use programming languages Java, C++ or Pascal for the problems.

The second-place BYU team was one of only two teams to finish all eight problems correctly.
