BYU student singers return from European competition, present recital Sept. 9

The Brigham Young University School of Music will present an American Institute of Musical Studies Student Recital under the direction of Lawrence Vincent Thursday, Sept. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall of the Harris Fine Arts Center.

Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.

"Every year the intensive six-week program of the American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) in Graz, Austria, culminates in its Meistersinger Competition," said Vincent, director of BYU's opera program, who was instrumental in sending eight BYU student vocalists to this year's program.

"All of our students enrolled at AIMS this summer were among 58 who qualified for the competition. The majority of the competitors were either graduate or post-graduate students, and many had professional experience in apprentice programs or had sung leading roles in professional opera companies," Vincent said.

Among the eight finalists and two alternates chosen to sing with the AIMS orchestra were BYU's Marilyn Reid and Jennie Litster. Reid, a first-year master of music student, received second place and Litster, a senior in vocal performance, was awarded fifth place.

"This prestigious achievement is a reflection of the hard work and dedication that both Marilyn and Jennie have demonstrated throughout their studies," said Vincent.

The other featured BYU vocalists were Candice Johnson, Simone Hardisty, Christiane Hauser Swenson, Lonna Joy Smoot, Jason Vest and Sara Thomas.
