BYU student construction teams win at Reno competition, advance to nationals

Student teams from the Construction Management Department at Brigham Young University recently took first place in two categories at a student competition in Reno, Nev., and will advance to the national competition in Orlando, Fla., in March.

BYU teams placed first in the heavy civil building and design building categories and took second in residential building at the Associated Schools of Construction National Student Competition.

Thirty students on four teams represented the university in the competition, comprised of schools from Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico, Nevada, Montana, Idaho, Alaska, Arizona and Colorado.

Sponsored by the Associated General Contractors of America, the competition was divided into four sections: residential building, design building, heavy civil building and commercial building.

Teams were assigned tasks in their categories and were given 18 hours to develop a detailed business plan and present it to the judges. Participants were not told what the exact competition was, making practical experience a major factor.

The design builders were asked to design a suburban police station, the heavy civil builders were assigned a dam for a river and the residential builders were required to map out a planned community with a commercial building in the plans.
