BYU sponsors annual Rex Lee Run Against Cancer March 13

Preregistration begins Feb. 16-19 at WSC

The 15th annual Rex Lee Run Against Cancer will take place Saturday, March 13, on the Brigham Young University campus. The cost is $15 for the 5K run and $20 for the 10K run when registration is completed by March 12. Proceeds will go to the BYU Cancer Research Center to fund cancer research fellowships.

There is also a pre-registration from Feb. 16-19 at booths at the Wilkinson Student Center. Those who register at the pre-registration will get $2 off.

Regular registration goes from March 1-5, 8-12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Wilkinson Student Center and March 11-12 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the BYU University Parkway Center. Participants can also register online at rexleerun.byu.edu/register.php or by mailing a registration form and payment to E-181 BNSN, Provo, Utah, 84602.

Participants can also register the day of the race with a $5 late fee from 7 to 8:40 a.m. Opening ceremonies for the event will begin at 8:45 a.m. at the BYU Outdoor Track.

This year’s race will feature new technology with electronic chip timing. Each participant will be given a chip that will time them from the beginning to the end.

"We think this year's run is going to be the best ever," said Dan Simmons, director of the Cancer Research Center. "It's exciting to introduce these new innovations, with the chip timing and the course modifications. We'll have all the fun stuff we've had in years past, too. It's going to be terrific."

The race honors former BYU President Rex Lee who was U.S. Solicitor General and an avid runner. Lee died of lymphoma in 1996. The first Rex Lee Run, organized by cancer survivors in his honor, was held a few weeks after his passing.

Just as in years past, all runners will be entered into a raffle for prizes donated by community businesses to be presented after the race by a celebrity master of ceremonies. There will also be music and food.
