BYU Spanish theatre program to perform at international festival

The Brigham Young University Spanish Golden Age Theater will present "El Caballero de Olmedo" at the Chamizal Siglo de Oro Drama Festival in El Paso, Texas, Feb. 24.

This festival celebrates the literature and linguistic ties still shared by Spain and the border region of Mexico and the United States. The festival brings the best amateur and professional groups to the Chamizal stage, presenting works of the Spanish masters, both in English and Spanish.

Participants come from as far away as Puerto Rico, Spain and Jerusalem.

BYU's Spanish Golden Age Theater is entering its fourth year. The program provides students with experience in Golden Age Spanish Theater as they have the chance to assume all of the roles of a theatrical production, performing as directors, actors, stage and costume designers, editors, advertisers, composers and musicians.

"BYU's innovative production techniques have connected modern audiences to Golden Age texts and have significantly increased the number of American Comedia [three-act play] fans," said Laura Vidler, an assistant professor of Spanish at the U.S. Military Academy.

BYU Golden Age Theater also includes an outreach program. It consists of creating engaging materials for students, preparing curriculum for teachers and visiting classrooms and auditoriums in elementary, middle and high schools to stage parts or all of the play.

The purpose of the outreach is to get students and teachers excited about the world of Spanish Golden Age Theater.

These school visits come in addition to other performances students will stage in Provo, Salt Lake City, Logan, Park City, Pocatello and Rexburg in March.
