BYU sets Pearl Harbor commemoration for Dec. 7

In relation to the Saints at War exhibit in the Harold B. Lee Library, Pearl Harbor Day will be commemorated on Thursday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m. in Room 3228 of the Wilkinson Student Center at Brigham Young University.

The ceremony will feature a special tribute to LDS veterans of World War II (particularly those who served in Pearl Harbor) and a specific tribute to a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Mervyn Bennion, captain of the U.S.S. West Virginia, died as the ship sank in Pearl Harbor and for his valor was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. The program will pay tribute to him and to his family, who will be in attendance.

Attendees will also hear from Henry Backus, an LDS Pearl Harbor veteran who survived the day.

BYU’s space ace: Minor planet named in honor of Jani Radebaugh

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.
