BYU School of Music to present two one-act operas June 10-13

Directed by Darrell Babidge, vocal students from Brigham Young University’s School of Music will perform two one-act operas, Mozart’s “The Impresario” and Puccini’s “Suor Angelica,” Wednesday through Saturday, June 10-13, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center.

Admission is $5 for the Wednesday and Thursday performances and $10 for the Friday and Saturday performances. To purchase tickets, visit byuarts.com or call the Fine Arts Ticket Office at (801) 422-4322.

The theme of the performance, “Come Prepared to Laugh. Come Prepared to Cry,” reflects the two operas that will be performed — a comedy and a tragedy.

“The Impresario,” written originally in German, will be sung in English. This comical opera incorporates both singing and dialogue in a farce about two opera singers competing for a lead role.

“Suor Angelica," a tragic story about a young nun, will be sung in Italian with English supertitles. The piece will feature the story of Angelica and her seven years in a convent seeking forgiveness.

“Although the pieces aren’t as well-known as the mainstream operas, the contrast of the humorous against tragedy will appeal to everyone,” said Babidge, an assistant professor of voice. “The students are very talented singers, and the music is beautiful.”
